Ah…the master bedroom!
This is one of my favorite spaces to decorate because it’s a space where the homeowner can show off their style and personality.
Unfortunately, I’ve found that this tends to be a space that is often neglected in the homes that I visit!
I think it’s because the master bedroom is so personal that the average guest visiting your home won’t see it..
But, think of this. Studies show that the average night’s sleep is eight hours which equates to roughly 9,000+ days if you live to the ripe old age of 75!
Add to that the time we read, watch television or just relax in our bedrooms, and you can see why it makes sense to create a bedroom that makes you happy!
If the thought of decorating your bedroom seems overwhelming, I want to help you start with the one element in the room that will give you the most impact: the bed!
The secret to creating a luxurious bed is carefully selected layers.
And it all starts with the headboard…
The headboard really does set the mood for your bed, and it’s where you’ll want to invest the most money.
Not only is the quality of the headboard/bed important to the overall look, it’s also a key player in how comfortable your rest/lounging experience will be.
I personally love upholstered headboards because they provide support for my clients who love to read or watch television in bed.
Tutfted headboards are everywhere, and I love them but there is something refreshing about the sleek look of this Criterion bed by Bernhardt!
Once you’ve found the perfect headboard/bed, then you’ll want to invest the next chunk of money in quality bedding that not only LOOKS good but also provides a sublime sleep experience!
Designer Tip: Because the headboard is the star, keep the bedding SIMPLE!
I like the idea of simple yet luxurious hotel-style, high-thread count bedding in white or ivory!
Talk about luxury?!?! This Dormire nel Lusso collection by Legacy Linens is Egyptian Cotton and reminds me of the bedding you would see in the penthouse suite of a swanky resort!
The final element in your luxury bed design is your pillows.
The arrangement of your pillows is another lesson in layering, but here’s the Cliff Notes version:
- Use euro pillows as a back layer for added height and support
- Next, find “sleep pillows” that are covered in a nice pillow case for display but that will be the primary pillows you sleep on
- Finally, add in a few square throw pillows (18 inches or larger) as well as lumbar or kidney pillows if you have the space
Designer Tip: Throw pillows are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to add color and texture to your bed-scape.
I love the this Baudard Pillow found at Ariana Belle Pillows. The large-scale floral print adds just the right hint of softness and color to a bed display!
As you can see, creating a luxurious bed is all about the layers!
